Cyprus Weather

With around 340 days of sunshine annually, Cyprus is a year round destination. The temperature rarely drops below 15 degrees Celsius and can reach in excess of 40 degrees Celsius at the height of summer.

The island's climate is classified as 'arid Mediterranean', characterised by hot, dry summers and mild winters with occasional rainfall. These extensive dry and sunny periods are both a blessing and a curse for the country, on one hand boosting the tourism market whilst at the same time creating desperate water shortages.

Whilst the summers are unquestionably long and hot, there is a noticeable seasonal variety in the weather.

Spring (April-May)

Short though it may be, spring is for many people the best time to visit the island, a period where the temperature is at its most pleasant and the parched summer landscapes are replaced by a lush blossoming of wild flowers. Spring is the ideal time to take a walking holiday and experience Cyprus' natural beauty at a leisurely pace.

Summer (June-September)

Hot and dry, the summers in Cyprus are all the more intense the further inland you travel. The hottest months are July and August when inland temperatures can be stifling. Cooler temperatures can be found in coastal areas where the sea breeze provides welcome relief from the sun.

Autumn (October)

There is a rapid transition between winter and summer, with spring lasting two months and the autumn just one. During this season, Cyprus experiences a large portion of its annual rainfall, though the temperature generally remains pleasant.

Winter (November-March)

Winters are changeable with temperatures alternating between cold and warm. For a short period of time, snow can be found in the Troodos Mountains, allowing for a brief but vigorous winter sports season. During this period, it is not inconceivable to ski in the morning and sunbathe in the afternoon.
